Division of the National Communication
Association. According to our bylaws, the basic purpose of the
division is to promote the understanding and development of speech
and language processes.
Scholars
in this division are concerned with the utilization of speech, language,
or gesture in human communication including studies of discourse
processes, face-to-face interaction, communication competence, speech
act theory, cognitive processing, and conversation analytic, ethnographic,
ethnomethodological, and sociolinguistic work.
