International Student Union

Who We Are

The International Student Union (ISU) functions at Ohio University as the umbrella organization for 23 international organizations. ISU members come from all corners of the world, representing the collective educational, cultural, and developmental interests of over 100 countries.

What We Do

ISU is committed to assisting international students to become part of the Ohio University and Athens communities. ISU serves to promote cultural understanding through activities aimed at expanding cultural awareness. Specifically, among other services, we: serve as consultants to international student organizations; promote a sense of community among international and American students at OU; develop activities to increase intercultural exchange and international awareness; and provide opportunities for OU students to explore their leadership potentials.

Committees & Executives

The ISU, in addition to its member organization, is composed of executive positions and committees. These executives, committees and their responsibilities are as follows:

President - Presides over all ISU executive (EXEC) board and ISU General Body (GB) meetings, and all Council meetings. The presidents facilitates discussions at all ISU meetings.
Vice-President - The VP will sit on a small variety of committees as necessary, serving as a representative for ISU. These meetings often average out to about an hour a week.  The VP may be asked to lead meetings when the President is unavailable, make speeches welcoming guests to events, or meet with administrators in social engagements to discuss ISU.
Treasurer - Keeps a record of all business transactions of ISU. Presents a report of all accounts at each ISU-EXEC meeting as well as a financial statement at the end of each quarter. The treasurer is required to attend all weekly Student Activities Commission (SAC) meetings as well as several Financial Affairs Commission (FAQ) meetings throughout the quarter.
Programming Director (2) - Plans and implements international activities and programs including the International Dinner, the research symposium, and various international week events. The programming director is also responsible for advising and coordinating the Programming Committee meetings.
Communications Director – Works closely with member organizations to help them prepare advertisements for The Post and advertises ISU events through the use of flyers, posters, newspaper ads, press releases, and other innovative methods. The communications director coordinates public relations efforts of ISU and keeps track of a $10,000+ publicity budget. The communications director is also responsible for advising and coordinating the Communications Committee meetings.
Secretary - Keeps a record and does the roll-call at all ISU-EXEC and GB meetings, takes meeting minutes for executive board and general body meetings, and assists in administration of executive duties (creating the GB agenda, ordering food for the meetings, etc.). The secretary is also responsible for advising and coordinating the Historical Committee meetings.
Web Master - Monitors the ISU web site and updates it. Creates listserv on YahooGroups for the GB and executives to keep everyone communicated and posts reminders for the different events. Also advises member organization representatives on website design and helps them with the set up.
