Career exploration seminars are noncredit "mini" classes in which you learn about a degree major or career field that interests you. Some of you may not have chosen a major or know for sure which career field is best for you. Career exploration seminars can help. You'll explore one or two fields of special interest--choosing from among several exploration seminars available--and have a chance to formulate and evaluate your college career plans. After attending one, you may find you are not as interested in that field as you thought. Others, after learning more, identify a niche that best combines their interests and talents, and are then able to focus their academic and career ambitions more effectively. During the seminars, Ohio University faculty members and experienced professionals offer advice about career and academic paths and talk about both the satisfactions and challenges of their chosen careers. You'll be able to ask them questions about their work and about the preparation you should have for entry into their fields. Each seminar has its own schedule, but most are arranged during the late afternoons or evenings, so as not to conflict with your class schedule. Most meet only once for an hour or so. Even though you won't get a grade or earn credit for your exploration seminar, it may be an essential, educational, and fun part of your Early Start Freshman Summer Experience. Other supplemental educational opportunities will be available, for those interested in additional, optional programming. Activities will include: Stress Management Seminar, free tutoring sessions, "get the scoop" ice cream social with advisors and alumni, career advising services seminar, ropes courses, Alden Library 101, fall quarter advising and registration seminar, and information on community service and leadership development opportunities. Extracurricular Activities:
We're planning a full schedule of cultural, intellectual, athletic, and "just plain fun activities" for students to enjoy during free time. Students may enjoy theater presentations; athletics and intramural sports; trips to regional parks; free movies every Monday and Tuesday evening; several outdoor concerts; Hocking Hills hike, karoake, dance night, cornhole tournaments; picnics; amusement park and rafting trips; and much more. After all, college life isn't just about studying! In addition, you'll have access to a variety of athletic facilities on campus, including the indoor and outdoor tennis courts, an olympic-sized swimming pool with sun deck, a golf course and driving range, and the Ping Center which houses basketball, racquetball, and multipurpose courts, weights, aerobic, and fitness rooms, an indoor track, climbing wall, and game room. Surrounding the campus there is also a lighted bike path which extends beyond Athens for approximately 20 miles. Specific details, schedules, and registration information for the Career Exploration Seminars, Special Programming Seminars, and extracurricular activities will be included in your confirmation packet you will receive around the last week of May. |
