Ohio University Summer Sessions is pleased to offer a new and innovative summer program--The Early Start Freshman Summer Experience, designed for newly admitted Ohio University freshmen to get a head start on their university studies. Early Start Freshman Summer Experience at Ohio University in Athens is a fully integrated program offering a residential, credit-bearing curriculum coupled with a full range of student services designed to address the specific needs of first-year students. This program offers a perfect opportunity for students to gain the confidence they need to succeed at Ohio University. It is open to the entire freshman fall 2008 class. During the summer, Ohio University offers two 5-week summer sessions. Students opt to attend one or both sessions. In the Early Start Freshman Summer Experience, students will: - attend the orientation Precollege session held immediately prior to the start of summer classes. At this day-long session you will receive advising, complete placement testing, register for summer classes, and much more.
- have the option of moving in on Friday evening following orientation. Relax! Take your time and enjoy an evening picnic on the green for you and your family.
- register for 1-4 classes. Students are urged to take UC 115, The University Experience, for 2 hours of credit. This course is designed to help students adapt to university life, explore academic majors and their requirements, establish educational and career goals, and develop skills necessary for college success. Students may also register for tier requirements, core requirements, major requirements, or classes of special interest, all of which will be applied to your degree program. Click here for a complete listing of the courses available for Early Start Freshman Summer Experience students. All of these classes have been selected specifically because they have no prerequisite requirements and are typically freshman level courses.
- live in an on-campus residence hall. Each student will be paired with one roommate, also participating in the Early Start program, who has similar interests and goals. Early Start Freshman participants will be grouped together in Washington Hall on East Green and will have plenty of opportunities to mix with continuing Ohio University students.
- pay nothing for second session housing! For Early Start Freshman participants only, who purchased a first session housing contract and either a 14 or 20 meal plan. To receive free second session housing (a $659 value for double occupancy), you must purchase a 14 or 20 meal plan for second session and be registered for at least 3 credit hours.
- consider the option to enroll in the program without completing a Summer housing contract. This option is only for Early Start Freshman participants who live within commuting distance.
- register for classes during first session (June 23-July 15) or second session (July 28-August 29) or spread your courses across the entire summer term by registering for classes offered first and second sessions.
- participate in a large variety of educationally supportive and extracurricular activities outside the classroom.
- access financial aid for those who are eligible. Program participants wishing to apply for financial aid must complete a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you are interested in receiving aid to help cover some of the expenses of the Early Start Freshman Summer Experience Program. You may have already completed the 2008-2009 FAFSA and some of your award may be applied to summer quarter. To find out how, or if you have additional Financial Aid questions, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships at (740) 593-4141.
- explore access to all University resources. An Ohio University identification card will be issued to each student participating in the Early Start Freshman Program. You will need the id card to gain access to campus services and recreation centers. The id card will also serve as your meal card. You will receive details on when and how to obtain your id card when you receive your orientation materials.
- save money by registering for credit at a lower tuition price. Tuition always increases for Fall Quarter. By attending Summer Sessions, you can earn more credit at a lower tuition rate.
- attend the Early Start Freshman Summer Experience Program and jump ahead of the rest of the 2008 class of freshmen. This means you will register for fall classes before the majority of incoming freshmen; guaranteeing you first choice on classes that fill quickly.
Only freshman students who have already been admitted to Ohio University for Fall 2008 are eligible to participate in the Early Start Freshman Summer Experience. A limited number of new freshman students can be accommodated and registration to the program is on a first-come, first-served basis. First Session: June 23 - July 25, 2008...............Second Session: July 28 - August 29, 2008 |
