Do we need more “Doing” activities or “Thinking” activities in the field practicum? 

How do MSW students learn new professional skills in field practicum? Does students' reflection affect the use of other learning activities during the field practicum?  Students in field practica participate in activities that involve observation, doing (participatory), and conceptual linkage. In this study of MSW students, conceptual linkage activities represent students' overall reflective capacity to integrate classroom theory and field practice. The results indicate that conceptual linkage activities are more strongly related to learning outcomes than observation or participatory activities. There is also a significant interaction effect between participatory activities and conceptual linkage activities when students' satisfaction is considered. Discussion includes suggestions for increasing students' reflection to integrate classroom and field.

Patterns of Field Learning Activities and their Relation to Learning Outcomes 

Field practicum is an active learning process. This study identified the different learning stages or processes that student experience during their field practicum. 

First-year MSW students in field practica were asked how much they had engaged in educational learning activities such as observation, working independently, process recordings, and conceptual linkage activities for their practice. Forty eight students completed a questionnaire three times over the first-year field practicum. The results showed that observation and process recording decreased over the time points. However, most of participatory activities and conceptual linkage activities increased. Conceptual linkage activities were more strongly related to learning outcomes than observational or participatory activities. The discussion includes suggestions for enhancing student learning over the course of field practicum.

Top Down, Bottom Up, Implementation Guidelines, or Chaos and Confusion! Education Policy Implementation in Jamaica

Abstract
This study was conducted in two Jamaican parishes: Kingston and St. Thomas. Designed as a case study, the research planned to explore top-down and bottom-up implementation approaches, as well as political model theory. What efforts make programs succeed, and what problems make them fail?
This study is part of a larger study. This is a first-hand account of implementers’ challenges with implementing. Interviews and document analysis were the main techniques of data collection. The study concludes by highlighting five major findings and suggestions for policy implementation.

COMMUNICATION SCIENCES AND DISORDERS Professor BROOKE HALLOWELL chaired the first-ever Global Summing on Higher Education in Communication Sciences and Disorders in Newport Beach, CA. The goal was to foster collaboration and information exchange to enhance international education and research in communication sciences and disorders. More than 400 academic leaders participated, including representatives from more than 26 countries.

Winsome Chunnu-Brayda co-publishes journal article in The Journal of Pan African Studies

This case study examines the leadership of two controversial figures in education: Benner C. Turner, president of South Carolina State College and Mavis Gilmour, minister of education of Jamaica. Both Turner and Gilmour are remembered historically as being autocratic leaders. But this study reveals that there were times when these two leaders exhibited transformational
qualities that led to social change. While the study is theoretical tenable, it contrast sharply to other leadership studies that are approached from an abstract or conceptual understanding of leadership. This study focuses predominately on the practical application of leadership theory by situating the subjects within a historical timeframe and substantiating how they led.

CASE Award for Perspectives magazine 

PERSPECTIVES magazine received a silver medal for editorial design in the 2012 Circle of Excellence Award competition, sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

CASE is the major national organization for higher education communications, marketing, alumni relations and advancement professionals.

Seventy eight entries were submitted. The publication won for the Table of Contents design from the Autumn/Winter 2011 issue. This spread was designed by art director and alumna Tina Ullman and features a photo by Rebecca Sell, faculty member and alumna. The other national winners in this category came from the University of Missouri, Columbia; Stanford University; University of Notre Dame and Columbia University.

The magazine is published by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity.

received the Accredited Airport Executive designation 

KEN CARLEY, director of Ohio University's AIRPORT operations, recently completed the Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) program. 

The American Association of Airport Executives' Accredited Airport Executive program commands respect in the airport industry.

Candidates enrolling in the Accredited Airport Executive Program must have at least three years of full-time public airport management experience. They also are required to meet a number of prerequisites and complete three phases designed to test one's knowledge, comprehension and understanding of aviation management.

In addition to successfully completing the multiple-choice exam and the writing requirement, candidates are required to complete an oral interview with a panel of executive members in order to receive the A.A.E. designation. Carley was interviewed June 1.

Since 1954, the AAAE has been committed to the advancement of aviation professionals by granting the A.A.E. designation to those who have demonstrated their ability to handle the responsibilities of airport management, regardless of airport size.

ABSTRACT
Coaching education has been part of the United States soccer landscape for over 40 years. However, the education of youth soccer coaches is a recent phenomenon. The purpose of this study was threefold: a) to provide contextual reflections of the USSF National Youth Coaching License (NYL); b) to share the impact of the course on coaching efficacy; and 3) to critically discuss the implications of the lessons learned through these reflections and research on the design of quality coach education for youth sport coaches. The statistical evidence in conjunction with reflective comments demonstrate that The Game in the Child model and the NYL curriculum provide the contextual framework for an effective L-S coaching education program.
